ILUMASS
Integrated Land-Use Modelling and Transportation System Simulation
(2001-2007)
In the project ILUMASS (Integrated Land Use Modelling and Transportation System Simulation) seven research institutions in Germany developed an integrated, completely microscopic simulation model of land use, transport and environmental impacts in urban regions. The ILUMASS model is structured into three components:

(1) The land use component is based on the land use part of the IRPUD model developed at the Institute of Spatial Planning of the University of Dortmund, but is completely microscopic as the transport part of ILUMASS. The land use part contains submodels of demographic development, household formation, life cycles of firms, location of residential and non-residential buildings and intraregional labour mobility in a model of the regional labour market and intraregional household mobility in a model of the regional housing market.

(2) The transport part of ILUMASS simulates the daily mobility of persons based on a microscopic model of activity patterns and the resulting trips, as well as goods transport flows, coupled with a microscopic traffic assignment model.

(3) The environment part of ILUMASS models environmental impacts of the modelled traffic flows and land use patterns, such as greenhouse gas emissions, air quality, traffic noise and visual intrusion and selected emissions of land use.

The ILUMASS model was calibrated with data of the urban region of Dortmund in the eastern part of the Rurh area and tested in experimental scenarios of land use and transport development.

ILUMASS was a co-operation of seven research institutions in Germany, the Institute of Spatial Planning of the University of Dortmund (IRPUD), Spiekermann & Wegener, Urban and Regional Research (S&W), Dortmund, the Centre for Applied Computer Science of the University of Cologne (ZAIK), the Institute of Urban Engineering and Urban Transport (ISB) of the RWTH Aachen, the Institute ofr Theoretical Psychology of the Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg, the Institute of Urban Studies and Sustainable Infrastructure Planning of the University of Wuppertal (LUIS) and the Institute for Transport Research of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Berlin, with DLR as project co-ordinator.

The little ILUMASS model

For test purposes, S&W and the Institute of Spatial Planning of the University of Dortmund implemented the little ILUMASS model, a reduced version of the ILUMASS model in which the time-consuming microsimulation of traffic flows was replaced by the existing more aggregate ransport model of the IRPUD model. The little ILUMASS model is described in
